Lacquer painting, known as sơn mài, from resin of the sơn tree, Rhus succedanea, was developed in Vietnam as a freestanding form, separate from decoration of wooden objects
Sơn mài, or traditional Vietnamese lacquer painting, is not only unique, but also challenging due to the level of complexity and detail needed to create it
Lacquer painting is a unique product of Vietnamese painting industry. Paintings are carefully inlaid with mother-of-pearl, skillfully and meticulously. In order to make a beautiful lacquer painting, the workmanship of the worker must be very high.
Two famous lacquer craft villages in Vietnam:
- Dinh Bang lacquer craft village (Tien Son – Bac Ninh)
- Tuong Binh Hiep lacquer craft village, Thu Dau Mot city, Binh Duong province
These paintings are made by a artisan in Tuong Binh Hiep, it can be said that each picture is unique.
